Building on over 10 years of food system work in the Walla Walla
Greetings Walla Walla Valley Food System Coalition supporters,
Since the completion of the USDA Local Foods Promotion grant in October 2020, the world has been tipped on its axis with two years of Covid lockdowns, continued supply chain issues and now increasing inflation. Local food systems and food security is now in the forefront of minds who prior to 2020 never gave it a second thought. Food systems and supply chains are being reexamined from a household to a national level by everyone who eats!
The USDA released a new granting opportunity in 2022 called Build Back Better (see link below). The first round focused on meat and poultry processing among other issues. The second round will focus on food supply chain infrastructure. An unprecedented $600 million dollars will be made available for this specific need. This could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Walla Walla Valley Food System Coalition to move forward with a Shared-Use Food Processing and Manufacturing Facility. A steering committee has reformed with new and old faces, and is meeting twice a month to shephard this facility into existence. As the first of many steps, we are forming a producer cooperative, but we are working on many other fronts simultaneously. One of those fronts is a new producer needs assessment survey, which you will find a link to below. Please fill out this short survey by January 8th, 2023. Please share with other producers who you believe would be interested. The turn around on this work is breakneck if we want to be in the running for this granting opportunity.
